Chapter One
Another night of coming home to only furniture. Ryan’s mother had taken on another shift at the hospital. Fourth time in the last two weeks.
Ryan sighed and shut the front door behind himself. He then walked over to the table, where twenty dollars rested and a note. Picking up the note, Ryan quickly read, Order take out son. Mumbling to himself, Ryan replied with, “You could have just text me.”
It was a normal night of studying and watching TV alone, with no call from his mother yet. However, Ryan’s study time was cut short when he heard the neighbors arguing next door. With Ryan’s window open and the living room window at the neighbor’s house open as well, Ryan could clearly hear the conversation, breaking his entire concentration.
“You’re drunk again, aren’t you!?” A female voice yelled.
“Why is it any of your business!?” A male voice yelled back.
“It’s my business because you come home like this, all jacked up and-“
The conversation is cut for a moment, right in mid-sentence. Startled, Ryan rest his pencil down on his math book as he waited for someone to speak. I didn’t hear anyone close the window. Ryan thought to himself.
The silence began to make Ryan’s legs shake, anticipating for some sort of dialogue. Some sort of sign that everything was alright. But there was nothing. Maybe I should go over there. Ryan continued to think. No, mother told me to stay out of their domestic disputes.
Hearing a loud shatter, as if some sort of glass had broken, the decision was clear. Ryan had to go over there.
Following the loud noise, the lady began to scream as more loud noises of crashing and shattering glass echoed the yard between the two homes. With cries of HELP and PLEASE ringing from their home, Ryan jumped out his bedroom window and sprinted across the yard. Wasting no time, Ryan ran to the door, knocking with an anxious knock. No one answered. But the screams and loud noises didn’t stop. Ryan had to do the forbidden, ignoring all his mother’s golden rules. Gripping the doorknob, Ryan did the unbelievable. Ryan PULLED THE ENTIRE DOOR OFF THE HINGES!! Using one hand, and extraordinarily little effort, Ryan had the neighbor’s front door lying on the yard!
Standing in the doorway, Ryan stared down the man who was now startled, rising off the floor where the man’s wife laid underneath him. Looking down at his wife, Ryan could see the blood spilling from her nose. Ryan could also see old bruises that were barely healing. What once was a face for the public, was now hidden from eyes outside of her home.
Enraged, Ryan locked eyes with the man standing across from, who had blood stained on his fist. Ryan was now on autopilot.
“Stay out of this boy,” The man warned Ryan.
Ryan walked into their home as if the man wasn’t even standing there. Passing by him, Ryan bent down and presented the palm of his hand out to the distressed woman. “May I help you up?” Ryan asked her.
The woman’s face was distraught, scared out of her mind.
As Ryan waited for the woman to except his offer, Ryan couldn’t help but wonder if she was scared of her husband or Ryan, seeing as Ryan had just ripped their house door off the wall as if it was paper out of a notebook.
“Damn super freaks, the government should have gotten rid of you all. Society shouldn’t have to live amongst you bastards,” The drunk man behind Ryan spoke.
Ryan ignored him.
Seeing that the woman was too disturbed to grab his hand, Ryan withdrew his hand. Ryan stared at the woman for a moment before saying, “It’s okay, I just wanna help you.”
The woman’s eyes widened, and her mouth slightly opened as she prepared to say something. But all that could come out was a scream as she witnessed her drunk husband lift a forty-ounce bottle over Ryan’s head, quickly shifting the bottle through the air. With so much speed and force behind the swing, the bottle shattered upon impact on the top of Ryan’s head! The problem was…Ryan didn’t move! It was as if Ryan didn’t even feel the impact.
Ryan watched as the startled woman began to panic, her body shaking in greater fear than before, like she was coming face to face with the grim reaper himself.
Turning around to face the abusive man, Ryan stood up slowly as his attacker slowly began to take steps backwards. Shaking just as hard as his wife was, the man’s eyes widened to a point of sober appearance. His words began to trip as he pleaded, “J…ju…just go home now. I was…I wasn’t bothering you.”
Walking over to the man, Ryan gripped the collar of his button up shirt, gripping a hold of him with fierce aggression. “It’s much harder to fight a man than a woman, huh?” Ryan taunted him.
“You’re no man,” He responded.
“Neither are you,” Ryan replied.
With a quick and lazy launch, Ryan sent the man soaring with no chance of recovery as his body pierced the glass window about nine meters from where he was standing, sending him on his back in the front yard outside. His wife pushed out a devastating yell, assuming to the blind eye that she was still being attacked. Ryan’s body turned towards the screaming lady, giving her a look of disturbance. Ryan couldn’t help but wonder why the woman was screaming at him, when he had just saved her from her abusive husband.
The police were eventually called by another neighbor, with the neighborhood street nearly filled with people as the cops spoke to Ryan and the injured husband. With his wife standing beside the stretcher her husband laid in by the ambulance truck, two officers stood in front of them with a barrage of questions. The same was happening to Ryan, seeing three police officers instead of two on the other end of the front yard.
“So you’re saying he just ripped your door off and started abusing your husband?” An overweight male officer quoted.
“Yes sir,” The woman nodded.
“What happened to your face?” The female officer standing next to her partner asked the woman, much shorter and smaller than her companion.
“I tried to break up the fight between the two of them.”
Pausing as he took in the complete conversation, the male officer looked down at her husband who grunted in pain with his eyes not opened, barely able to lay still. Afterwards, the officer looked at his partner and said, “Alright, you ready for this?”
Gripping the handle on her concealed gun on her hip, the officer replied, “I got your back.”
Walking over to Ryan, the nineteen-year-old was soon facing not three but five cops now. Breaking the silence between the three officers who were done questioning Ryan, the plus sized officer spoke as he pulled out a pair of handcuffs. “Son, you mind turning around; you’re under arrest.”
Ryan’s mouth slightly dropped as his eyes moved from the handcuffs, to the only woman officer in the circle as she never took her hand off her gun’s handle, and back on the officer’s handcuffs.
“Ryan!” A voice yelled behind him.
Turning around, Ryan spotted his mother pulling up in the driveway of their home, leaving the police their chance at cuffing him. Placing the cuffs on his wrist as quick as possible with his hands around his back, Ryan watched as his mother hopped out of her car, breaking into a full-on sprint across their grass, into the neighbor’s yard. Once close enough to reach out and place her hand on Ryan’s shoulder, his mother questioned, “What the hell do you think you’re doing to my son?”
“Ma’am, we’re taking your son into custody,” The weighted officer answered.
“For what!?” An enraged mother continued to question.
“Assault,” The officer answered again as himself and the other officers walked Ryan to a police car.
Following them, Ryan’s mother continued to demand answers. “My son wouldn’t have assaulted no one if he didn’t have to, there’s got to be some sort of explanation, right Ryan?”
Before being placed into the car, Ryan looked back at the woman he believed to be saving as she gave him a look of sorrow and fear at the same time. Ryan then looked at his mother and responded with, “Does it really matter mom?”
Upon his response, the police aided Ryan into the back of the police car, closing the door behind him.
With a short-lived scene of his mother standing on the outside of the car, the officers pulled off in no time, with Axel drawing further and further away from his mother.
